2 new trains, 2 amalgamations and 1 extention - Southern Railway

There were long pending demands from public for new trains and extension of existing trains in southern railways, India.

Based on the demand, Southern railway had proposed the following to Railway board from 2019 and every year till 2023.

  • Bi weekly train from Ernakulam, Kerala to Velankanni, Tamilnadu 
  • Extension of Amirta express from Madurai to Rameswaram
  • Extension of Palaruvi express from Tirunelveli to Thoothukudi
  • Amalgamation of Guruvayur Punalur(16327 &16328) unreserved express with Passenger trains Madurai to Sengottai(06663 & 06503), Sengottai to Kollam(06659 & 06660) to run Madurai Guruvayur Madurai unreserved express (16327 & 16328)
  • Amalgamation of Trichy-Mayiladudurai, Trichy-Karur, Karur-Salem expresses
The railway board has finally approved all the above proposals along with a new train from Tirupati to Kollam.

However long pending demands from Multiple Train associations like Pollachi Train passengers association to run more trains in the Pollachi-Podanur route is not even considered this time as well. Pollachi and Podanur stations are part of Palakkad division.

Pollachi passengers and All South district passengers of TamilNadu travels to Mettupalayam frequently and demand to resume the trains ran during meter gauge time.

Most of the demands are

  • Coimbatore to Rameswaram daily 
  •  Thoothukudi to Coimbatore morning train.
  • Extension of Coimbatore Madurai intercity to Virudhunagar
  • Daily run of Tirunelveli to Mettupalayam from once in a week 
  • Re-origin the Palakkad Tiruchendur to Mettupalayam Tiruchendur 
Currently every Sunday, a special fare special train is running from Tirunelveli to Mettupalayam via Tenkasi and Pollachi-Podanur routes. And Monday, Mettupalayam to Tirunelveli on the same route.

Indian railways have also approved a vande Bharat express from Chennai Egmore to Tirunelveli. The preparation is in full swing to introduce this train by the end of August, 23.
